Getting Better…

October 18, 2009 - Leave a Response

Sunday came around nicely for us with all that sunshine, temperatures still ended up being about 10 below average for the middle of October, but compared how it has been going lately…this was a keeper! The cloud-free skies will allow for another temperature tumble tonight, most spots will dip down to freezing or a couple degrees below before we finally get started on a significant warm up. A dry and warming stretch of weather will kick in tomorrow with afternoon temperatures a tick above 60 degrees underneath lots of sunshine – what fall is typically like here in the Tri-State. And it only gets better from there…Tuesday will bring a few more clouds and a little bump up the thermometer with a couple days worth of southerly winds sending up into the mid 60s, and then we go back to sunshine on Wednesday and possibly our first 70-degree day in over three weeks! The next weather system and chance for rain will arrive on Thursday, but it may not be rainy until dinnertime and we will watch for a few thunderstorms to possibly move through too. A few showers look like they will longer into Friday before we dry back out, and then there will be another shot of cool fall air into the Ohio Valley with what looks like dry skies on both Saturday and Sunday. Stay tuned!

Staying On The Cool Side…

October 11, 2009 - Leave a Response

It may be cold enough for a touch of frost on the lawn this morning, and definitely on the windshield if your car is parked outside, so leave an extra moment for scraping the windows if you are hitting the road early. A really nice Sunday will be enjoyed with mostly sunny skies; it should feel a lot like Saturday afternoon did with highs just shy of 60 degrees. As we head into the workweek a weak weather system will try to move through on Monday and Tuesday, and at this point we don’t see a chance for rain with this one, just a few more clouds getting stirred up. There should be a little bump in temperatures with this weak system as winds turn out of the south, but we will still probably not hit 70 degrees. A much stronger storm system is scheduled to move in Thursday, and out ahead of it some rain showers will be possible in our area Wednesday. Thursday is a day we will have to watch for thunderstorms, possibly some strong storms if this system tracks a little further to the north than what our computer models are suggesting right now. Rain chances wrap up on the first half of Friday, and then more of the chilly fall air will pour in with Friday highs only expected to be in the lower 50s. Chilly and dry weather should hold for next weekend too, it looks sunny and dry for both Saturday and Sunday but another weekend with the furnace running as lows dip down into the 30s and afternoon highs just getting above 50 degrees! Stay tuned…

Rain Has Ended!!!

October 10, 2009 - Leave a Response

Some morning clouds are all that is left of the rainy skies of the past couple days; most locations did pick up two or more inches of water since Thursday! As clouds decrease through the day, northwest winds will keep us cool and may not even allow for temperatures to reach 60 this afternoon so keep the sweatshirt out even though the umbrella goes back in the closet. With mostly clear skies overnight, a good cooling effort is expected…and you couple that with all the water still in the ground and the recipe for fog is there on Sunday morning. After any morning fog burns off Sunday will be a quiet day with lots of sunshine, but a light wind out of the north will still keep temperatures down. For Monday and Tuesday a weaker weather system will stir up skies enough give us more clouds and a bit of a warm up, and it’s hard to keep rain completely out of the forecast – but we will for now. Another shot of cool air will settle in for Wednesday with dry skies, and then we look to Thursday for the next good chance for rain to roll in. A month later into fall and we would seriously be sweating a good chance for accumulating snow, but this one should be just warm enough to keep it all rain Thursday with a few showers spilling over into Friday. All signs then point to another shot of chilly air with dry skies for both Saturday and Sunday of next weekend; we’ll keep our eyes on it. Stay tuned!

A Milder Week Ahead…Snowflake Watch May Still Be On Next Week!

October 5, 2009 - Leave a Response

The afternoon sun felt good today, even if we did end up a few degrees short of the forecast high temperature…the light winds made for a very pleasant day. While skies will stay clear for most of the overnight, I don’t think it will be quite as cold out the door tomorrow morning as it was this morning, we should stay in the 40s – and maybe even upper 40s across the western half metro as the light east winds provide a light urban heat island effect. The next weather system will cloud up skies tomorrow, but that will be kind of a slow process with the dry air overhead and rain chances don’t really look impressive until after dark…but a few showers could be seen by afternoon. As rain and a few thunderstorms move through Tuesday night, another quick shot of cool and dry Canadian air will arrive Wednesday riding some gusty west winds. Skies will not stay rain free for long, an active weather pattern is setting up and that means another chance for rain by Thursday afternoon with southerly winds pushing temperatures back up to 70 degrees – maybe the last 70 for a while too. A strong cold front is expected to swing through during the day Friday with a good chance for rain and thunderstorms – possibly some strong to severe, and then cool and dry air settles in for both Saturday and Sunday. After the weekend it gets interesting, it appears as if another weather system will move through on Monday bringing a chance for rain showers, and in its wake some really cold air plunges south out of Canada with enough moisture still hanging around to possible result in potentially our first snowflakes of the season. Now – it may be wet snow mixed with rain, and the chance for accumulating snow or travel-related problems is low as temperatures will still probably be well above freezing. But still, that’s a bit early to talk about the white stuff, the earliest measurable snowfall on record here in the Tri-state was October 11…way back in 1925!!! Stay tuned…

A Couple Rounds Of Rain…And Then Snowflakes?!?

October 4, 2009 - Leave a Response

Even though temperatures were close to ten degrees below average, this Sunday did not leave much to complain about with all the sunshine. The lack of cloud cover overnight will lead to some chilly temperatures by the time we wake up on Monday morning…upper 30s will be possible in some spots which is just about, but not quite in the “touch of frost” range. After the cold start, Monday afternoon should be quite pleasant with a high temperature around 70 degrees and light winds, and then the focus will be on an approaching storm system and chances for rain on Tuesday. Showers and a few thunderstorms are expected Tuesday, but not until the afternoon or even evening for a lot of us. This storm does not appear to be packing a severe weather or heavy rain threat, just a nice little drink for the backyard and maybe that grass seed you put down a couple weeks ago. Wednesday will be dry and a windswept day as more chilly fall air moves in, but an active weather pattern setting up will push another storm system into the Ohio Valley for Thursday afternoon with the potential for soaking rains that will probably spill over into Friday before we dry out for a couple days. It gets interesting for the first part of next week, a big storm system could develop out over the east coast…one of those Nor’easters which is bad news for the East Coast megalopolis…and here in the Ohio Valley that would mean the Canadian floodgates open up sending the Tri-state into a fall deep freeze! If there is enough moisture around, the first flakes of the season cannot be ruled out…stay tuned!

Little More Sun For Sunday…

October 3, 2009 - Leave a Response

After some morning sunshine, today turned out mostly cloudy as expected…when that chilly Canadian air rolls in, it’s inability to hold much water vapor typically results in the low overcast sky. Late tonight the clouds should break up some, and Sunday should generally be a brighter day – but still on the cool side with temperatures just getting on the warm side of 60 during the afternoon. Sunday night/Monday morning could be the coolest night of the next several if skies stay clear, but there is some uncertainty with a storm system expected to move across Tennessee and Kentucky and whether or not it will kick some clouds up our way – essentially acting like a blanket. Regardless of how that plays out, Monday still looks like a quiet day across the Tri-State with enough sun to give us a shot at hitting 70 degrees. A storm system is expected to move in for Tuesday, clouds should increase through the day with showers and storms probably holding off until the afternoon and then rain continuing into the overnight. This is where our extended forecast information starts to change some from the past couple days so it’s tough to have a lot of confidence in how the second half of this week will play out…as of right now it looks like Wednesday will dry out for us, and then there could be another storm system and associated chance for showers and thunderstorms for Thursday afternoon through Friday morning. Then dry Friday afternoon all the way through next weekend, but definitely on the cool side of things with more lows in the 40s and highs only in the lower half of the 60s. Stay tuned!

Fall In Full Force…

October 2, 2009 - Leave a Response

Those blustery winds of fall have kicked back in, and there will probably be a long line for the hot chocolate at those high school football games tonight. Skies have dried out nicely after the morning rains, and other than a few sprinkles being possible through the morning hours of Saturday, the weekend looks acceptable. Winds will still blow a bit on Saturday with more clouds around than sunshine, but by Sunday a full does of sunshine is expected. All of Sunday’s sun will not result in much of a warm-up though; we will have to wait until Monday and Tuesday for that. While a return of the 70-degree temperatures is possible, we are only talking low 70s with more rain moving back in for Tuesday as the next big storm system arrives. It’s tough to speculate on how much rain we will see on Tuesday, but as that system winds down through Wednesday we are seeing signs that the Canadian floodgates will open back up and another rush of chilly fall air will move for the end of next week. Another weather system with the potential for soaking rains could develop and move in by next weekend…fortunately it is still early enough in the season for all precipitation to fall as rain, but if this was early November as opposed to early October this could really get interesting. Stay tuned!

Winds Of Change…

September 27, 2009 - Leave a Response

What’s left of our Sunday is actually pretty nice, the sun finally did come out and temperatures are pushing up towards 70 degrees. Get that walk in; because the next few days are not going to be very pleasant…a strong cold front is going to move through after midnight tonight packing a very windy punch. There is some concern that damaging wind gusts could pour out of some of those thunderstorms, and the timeline looks to be right around 3 or 4am for most of us with the rain off to the east by morning commute time. Monday should be dry, but quite windy with more clouds than sun and temperatures will not climb out of the 60s. Tuesday will be even cooler with temperatures just getting above 60 during the afternoon, and is will still be pretty windy Tuesday as well. Things should calm down by Wednesday with more sunshine expected too, and Thursday looks like a very nice fall day to kick off October with temperatures starting to rebound a little. Another weather system could be moving in for Friday and Saturday with chances for rain, but at this point there doesn’t seem to be a heavy rain or severe weather threat with this system…just garden-variety showers with another shot of cool fall air rolling in behind for the first part of next week. Stay tuned!

Almost Done With The Rain…

September 26, 2009 - Leave a Response

We will have to closely watch an area of strong to severe storms just off to the southwest…right now we expect the main severe weather threat to stay close to the Evansville and Louisville area, but it will be a close call. Regardless of where the severe storms stay, we are probably in for another real good soaking with the heart of that slow-moving storm system finally pushing through overnight. Most of the rain and storms should move through between about sunset and midnight with rain winding down quickly early on Sunday morning. We will probably wake up to clouds Sunday morning, but then see skies really brighten up with southwesterly winds gusting at times pushing temperatures into the upper 70s – real nice for the Bengals game. Another cold front will quickly move in late Sunday night with a strong blast of fall behind it, and there will not be a lot of rain with this front…but it could hit at the wrong time with showers and storms probably timing out right with the Monday morning commute in to work. A strong west wind will then kick up really drying us out and pushing temperatures well below average for the end of September. The cool and stable Canadian air will result in dry skies right on through the work week, with overnight lows getting pretty close to frosty territory in some of our outlying areas. A slight rebound in temperatures will be seen by the end of the week, and a weak weather system may try to move in late Friday or Saturday with an unimpressive chance for scattered showers.

50/50 Weekend Ahead…

September 25, 2009 - Leave a Response

Rain showers are starting to wind down across the area, but the tendency at night this time of year is for clouds to drop down to the ground resulting in mist. drizzle and fog – so it will stay soggy through the overnight. Winds will turn out of the southeast Saturday, and that should eat up the clouds some but at the same time provide a little extra energy for some storms that are scheduled to move through during the afternoon. At this point, the best chance for strong to severe thunderstorms is just off to our west, but it’s a threat that cannot be ruled all the way out for us here in the Tri-State so look for it if you plan on being outdoors on Saturday – at the UC football game for example. By Sunday it looks like the rainy weather will have moved off to the east, and we should be in for a nice and pleasant afternoon for the Bengals game with a southwesterly breeze making its presence felt. Another cold front really packing a chilly punch is then expected to move through late Sunday night/early Monday morning with a chance for rain, and more importantly a rush of Canadian air accompanied by gusty west winds. It should stay cool and dry for a good chunk of next week…it looks dry Tuesday through Thursday, and then possibly a weaker front/weather system may come through on Friday.
